The expandable brush set on the bottom left and the palettes on the bottom right are also very conveniently accessible. I do like the way most settings and controls are at the bottom of the screen, which mimics the actual painting experience better than many other apps. The user experience of the ArtRage app is overall comparable to Art Studio, which was very satisfactory to me. Here are a few test strokes I made with various brush / pens in ArtRage: I think ArtRage really does a great job with the texture they emphasize on how the paint and brush interact with canvas, instead of creating more artificial and crazy brush head patterns. For example, a stroke made with an oil painting brush has a thicker, glossier feel with the traces of the brush hairs a stroke made with water color brush bleeds just like how water color does on paper. In addition to a very user friendly design (which I will demonstrate more below), ArtRage specializes in creating a more realistic painting experience through the rendering your stroke with the right texture based the painting brush and material. However, ArtRage feels different from those apps. Their features might vary slightly from one to another, but the main differentiator between the various apps of this type to me is mostly the usability design. Art Studio, for example, is one such app so is Sketch Pro. One might ask: how can one iPad drawing app be much different from another? I think there definitely is a group of very similar apps trying to cover the basic functions of Photoshop – layers, palettes, brush patterns, etc. :] Now I wonder if the real oil paint feels very similar in its properties.

Even though I struggled with the texture and the mixing pattern of the oil paint, I thought I produced something reasonable. I picked a fairly common painting that I liked from a county fair several years ago – the profile of a spanish dancer. So, I thought this would be a good opportunity to try its digitally.Īs a fresh newbie, I decided it is safer to draw based on an existing painting rather than creating my own. It’s not only costly, but messy and time consuming. I have never done real oil painting before – I always wanted to, but collecting all the materials (brushes, paint, canvas, space) for getting started with one piece of art is some serious business.

I originally intended to do my next piece of drawing in Sketch Club however, after checking out ArtRage (thanks to Yuzhi’s recommendation), I couldn’t resist giving it a shot first.
